Sacred Harp in Washington, Arkansas

Last Sunday afternoon we gathered and sang in the historic (constructed 1861) Washington Methodist Church building in Washington, Arkansas. The singing was an (re)introduction of Sacred Harp to this area, and part of their larger weekend Jonquil Festival at the Washington State Park. We had some singers from East Texas and Northwest Arkansas, as well as locals and visitors to the festival. Because of having more visitors than singers with books, we sang selections from both the 1991 and 2012 editions of The Sacred Harp, rather than trying to have books for everyone (I even snuck in one from the 1911 J. L. White book). We hope all had a joyous time. It is the intent of the organizers to make this an annual event.
