The Mediator born for glorious purposes

Philip Doddridge wrote “The Mediator born for glorious purposes.” In The Sacred Harp (1991 Denson Edition), we sing this with the tune Raymond (No. 441). Raymond is a major companion arranged by John Gordon McCurry from the minor tune North Salem by Stephen Jenks. We use stanzas 1 and 2 from this hymn by Doddridge.

The tune appears in the 2012 Cooper Edition of The Sacred Harp under the title Jesus Saves (No. 198).

1. Hark the glad sound! The Savior comes,
The Saviour promised long;
Let ev’ry heart prepare a throne
And ev’ry voice a song.

2. On him the Spirit largely pour’d
Exerts its sacred fire;
Wisdom and might, and zeal and love
His holy breast inspire.

3. He comes the pris’ners to release,
In Satan’s bondage held;
The gates of brass before him burst,
The iron fetters yield.

4. He comes from thickest films of vice
To clear the mental ray,
And on the eyeballs of the blind
To pour celestial day.

5. He comes the broken heart to bind,
The bleeding soul to cure,
And with his righteousness and grace,
T’enrich the humble poor.

6. His gospel trumpets publish loud
The jub’lee of the Lord;
His people are redeemed now,
Their heritage restor’d.

7 Our glad Hosannas, Prince of peace,
Thy welcome shall proclaim'
And heav’n’s eternal arches ring,
With thy beloved name.
