“True Christians in every generation have attempted to worship their Lord in the best and most appropriate way. The concern for the most zealous, devoted, acceptable worship of God, ‘in spirit and in truth’ (John 4:24), has in a sense been the genius of true Christian experience… There is an apparent need in the present hour to recover and experience again the fervor and sublimity of primitive Christian worship. Especially does this appear apparent in the area of worship in song. To do this effectively and learn to worship our God acceptably, ‘in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs’ (Eph. 5:19), ‘with reverence and godly fear’ (Heb.12:28), may necessitate going to the Word of God and anew reviewing the nature of true worship as exemplified in worshipers of old.”
John J. Overholt, in the introduction to The Christian Hymnary, p. v.
