Rest for weary souls

Does the gospel-word proclaim
Rest, for those who weary be?
Then, my soul, put in thy claim,
Sure that promise speaks to thee:
Marks of grace I cannot show,
All polluted is my best;
Yet I weary am, I know,
And the weary long for rest.

In the ark, the weary dove
Found a welcome resting-place;
Thus my spirit longs to prove
Rest in CHRIST, the ark of grace:
Tempest-tossed I long have been,
And the flood increases fast;
Open, LORD, and take me in,
Till the storm be overpast.

From "Rest for weary souls", by John Newton (1725-1807)
Olney Hymns, 1779

When man shall keep his heart and mind on the things of God, it is there he finds his own ark. The foolishness of man's natural ideas and whims, along with what the world deems as right, will ever attempt to impede the building of this ark in the earthly state.

Shall man use the very best materials when he attempts to construct the ark? Or will he settle for something which cannot withstand high winds and rough seas? The ancient landmarks which our Lord gave us must surely be the only components our ark should contain.

My husband wrote music to these lyrics. It is one of my favorite songs. If you are interested, email me at brandi.koonce@gmail.com and I will send it to you! He is one of the writers for RedMountainMusic.

Hi, Brandi. It's great to hear from you. We once had a large family of Koonces in our community, to whom I am related on my mother's side. Through marriages and moves, there's no one here anymore with that last name.

I am a little familiar with Red Mountain Music because of hearing about "The Gadsby Project". I'd love to hear your husband's song with these words. I'll send you an e-mail.
