Dead Credentials

The following newspaper clipping, from the area of Spring Creek in Lawrence County, Tennessee, provides some very unique wording regarding ordination papers -- they were "dead in his hands." Obviously the idea is that church no longer recognizes this person as a minister, but I've never heard that expression before.
