Pay or pay

Yahoo and others are reporting this story: 21-Year-Old Sues Parents for College Tuition — and Wins.

This is a sad situation at several levels. But what are the implications of courts making the decision that parents must pay for their child's college education? Sounds positively ludicrous to me.

It's kind of a weird case? She could only sue because her parents are divorced, and divorce law in that state assures that children will have college paid for. Usually it's the dad, I suppose, who has to pay. But in this case, it's both parents.

It's pretty odd, for sure.

Yes, on the weird side. Odd definitely. I guess the state involvement itself, though, may not be as weird as it seems on first blush -- since the state has already "intervened" in the marriage.

I ran across this interview statement by the father about New Jersey law:

"Do you realize that if you are married in the state of New Jersey, you are not under any legal obligation to pay for college? But, if you get divorced, you must contribute? Please, someone tell me how that makes sense. Not only do you have to pay, but apparently you have to pay for any college they want to go to, anywhere in the country."
