Christ Jesus Died for Sinners

Ogden, William Augustine (October 10, 1841–October 14, 1897) unlisted composer of Christ Jesus Died for Sinners, page 485 (The Sacred Harp, 2012), was born in Ohio. W. M. Cooper arranged this song as a ladies duet with chorus. The song was written circa 1887 and probably first appeared in Triumphant Songs No. 1 (Edwin O. Excell, editor, Chicago, IL: E. O. Excell Co., 1887). W. A. Ogden served 3 years in the 30th Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the War Between the States. During that time he organized a male voice choir in the Army of the Cumberland. After the war, he attended the Boston School of Music. He published The Silver Song, his first song book, in 1870. “In 1887 he became superintendent of music in the public schools of Toledo, Ohio.” Other songs written by Ogden include He is Able to Deliver Thee, and Where He Leads I’ll Follow.

485      Christ Jesus Died for Sinners

1. There’s a wonderful theme in the gospel tongue,
As e’er was heard, as e’er was sung,
And thro’ all the world the message rung,
“Christ Jesus died for sinners.”

2. ’Tis a wonderful theme, and I oft have read
How Jesus bowed His weary head;
“’Tis finished,” to the world He said,
“Christ Jesus died for sinners.”

3. ’Tis a wonderful theme, that the Lord should give
His life that I might life receive;
And now He bids me look and live,
“Christ Jesus died for sinners.”

Chorus:
Tell the message o’er again,
Jesus died for sinful men;
Sound the word and make it plain,
“Christ Jesus died for sinners.”
