To know the truth, and other quotes

The posting of quotes by human authors does not constitute agreement with either the quotes or their sources. (I try to confirm the sources that I give, but may miss on occasion; please verify if possible.)

"To know the truth is to be 'a disciple indeed,' and to be made blessedly free." -- J. C. Philpot

"Holy Scripture...is to be believed, as God's instruction, in all that it affirms; obeyed, as God's command, in all that it requires; embraced, as God's pledge, in all that it promises." -- From "Short Statement" No. 2 in The Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy

"Let me be homo unius libri." -- John Wesley (“a man of one book,” that is, the Bible; possibly the Latin used this way originating with Thomas Aquinas)

"I meditate thereon [difficult Bible passages] with all the attention and earnestness of which my mind is capable. If any doubt still remains, I consult those who are more experienced in the things of God, and then the writing whereby being dead they yet speak. And what I thus learn, that I teach." -- credited to John Wesley in Raleigh Christian Advocate (Raleigh, NC), Vol. XX, No. 37; Wednesday, Sept 23, 1874, p. 1

"A worldly kingdom cannot exist without an inequality of persons, some being free, some imprisoned, some lords, some subjects." -- Martin Luther

"Experience is the hardest kind of teacher, it gives you the test first and the lesson afterward." -- Oscar Wilde

"What makes still-married couples successful is not the absence of conflict, but their ability to manage conflict when it arises." -- Diane Sollee

"If you don’t read the newspaper, you are uninformed. If you do read the newspaper, you are misinformed." -- attributed to Mark Twain (aka Samuel Langhorne Clemens)

"Houston wasn’t judged, we all were. Puerto Rico wasn’t judged, we all were. All of creation points to its Creator. Even the hurricanes." -- Mike White, Columbus, Ohio

"Atheism is a non-prophet organization." -- George Carlin (and we might add that Christianity should be a non-profit organization.)

"The soul of religion is the practic part." -- John Bunyan in Pilgrim's Progress
