Brief thoughts on same sex attraction
- “I’ve known too many gay people who say they have begged God to take away their SSA, to believe feeling SSA is a choice.”
- “Same sex attraction is a sin and it is a spiritual stronghold from which Jesus can deliver a person. There is no such thing as a sexual orientation. Bible knows nothing of ‘sexual orientations’.”
- “Sin begins in the heart long before it is carried out in the flesh. It would be sinful for a person to desire to murder someone, as it would be for him or her to commit the act of murder. There is nothing in the Bible to support a notion that it is okay to desire and entertain sin in the heart and mind, even if you do not commit the act.”
- “Simply being attracted to a member of the opposite sex is not sinful. Temptation is not the same as sin. There are people who struggle with SSA, but who hate it and want to get help for it. I wouldn’t say they are in sin.”
- “It is one thing to struggle with something we know is a sin. It is quite another to entertain the desire and refuse to acknowledge it as a sin.”
- “One can be same sex attracted and not entertain it, but I am saying a lot of the time we continue to struggle with sins because it’s in our nature. God doesn’t always take them away.”
- “Equating homosexuality with heterosexuality is the first step LGBT uses to get Christians to say homosexuality is okay.”
- “There is no reason to identify as homosexual if one has not and will not engage in homosexual behavior.”
Sexual orientation = a pattern of romantic, physical, and/or sexual attraction
There are Bible truths we know are true – regardless of what we think is or is not true when a person is born. The Bible teaches that all are sinners (Romans 3:23). We are “predisposed” to sin. We are all born sinners. However, that does not excuse our sin (Romans 1:19-21).

Do not lie to yourself
Above all, do not lie to yourself. A man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point where he does not discern any truth either in himself or anywhere around him, and thus falls into disrespect towards himself and others. Not respecting anyone, he ceases to love, and having no love, he gives himself up to the passions and coarse pleasures, in order to occupy and amuse himself, and in his vices reaches complete bestiality, and it all comes from lying continually to others and to himself.

50th hymn meter
I recently discovered a new hymn
meter designation – 50th meter – that I do not recall seeing before
(Thanks to Matt Bell.) The 50th meter was a meter for the 50th Psalm.
Similarly, William
Gadsby uses Psalm Tune names for several of his hymn meters – 104th
for the 10.10.11.11 pattern, 112th for L. P. M., 122nd for S. P. M., and 148th
for H. M.
According to Richard Crawford in The
Core Repertory of Early American Psalmody (Volumes 11-12, pp. xxxix,
xl), the “old” 50th meter was 10.10.10.10.11.11. (as in the tune Lyons),
and the “new” 50th meter was 6 lines of 10 (as in the tune Wordsworth).

Simple assembly
The New Testament requires assembly, by command and example (Hebrews 10:25). It is quite clear that meeting in homes is a primary example in the scriptures (Acts 1:13, Acts 2:2, Acts 8:3, Acts 12:12, Acts 20:7-12, Romans 16:5, 1 Corinthians 16:19, Colossians 4:15, Philemon, verse 2, 2 John, verse 10). The inspired text compares the church to a house. It is God’s house (Ephesians 2:19, 1 Timothy 3:5, 15, Hebrews 10:21, 1 Peter 2:5, 1 Peter 4:17). This concept and New Testament practice should not be taken lightly. However, is this pattern exclusive? Are any other “worship facilities” – meeting places – suggested in the New Testament?
Acts 2:46 says they (the church at Jerusalem) continued [to meet] daily “with one accord in the temple,” as well as from house to house.[i] Acts 5:12 suggests them meeting at Solomon’s porch. In Ephesus Paul borrowed or rented “the school of Tyrannus”[ii] for meeting with his disciples and discoursing on the things of God (Acts 19:9-10). It appears, then, that though meeting in private homes was the rule, that there were exceptions. These exceptions make it difficult to unconditionally agree with Mario Vega when he writes, “When the church today returns to house to house ministry, it will recover the model of the New Testament church.”
Modern churches in the United States have complicated church meetings and church matters. Many waste huge sums of money on extravagant buildings. However, these kinds of abuses do not support the exclusive use of private houses if there are legitimate exceptions found in the New Testament. It appears there are at least two or three. On the other hand, why do we make the exceptions the rule and the rule the exceptions? That is a legitimate question to ponder!

The keeper of the saints
“Neither angels nor men are the keepers of the saints, but the Lord himself; he is the keeper of every individual saint, of every regenerate person, of every one of his sheep, of every member of his church; he keeps them by his power, he preserves them by his grace, he holds them with his right hand; guides them by his counsel, keeps their feet from falling, and brings them safe to glory: and a watchful keeper he is, he does not so much as slumber; he keeps them night and day, lest any harm them.”

Straight Party
From the standpoint of politics, straight-party voting in Texas apparently favored the Democrats. At the least, both the Republican and Democratic parties thought so. First, the Republican Party is the majority in Congress and hold the governor’s seat, so they are most responsible for passing the bill. Second, since the Democratic Party sued over the change in March 2020, they must have thought straight-party voting helped their cause.[ii] In September 2020, with less than 3 weeks to the start of early voting, a federal judge blocked Texas from eliminating straight-party voting. Whatever the ins and outs of the suit and its outcome, we did not have straight-party voting on the ballot.
As a practical matter, straight-party voting helps “down-ballot” candidates – candidates whom voters often do not know and might not vote for otherwise. Ideally, the elimination of straight-party voting would force voters to make choices that are more informed on the down-ballot races. More likely, they will make ill-informed choices or just simply not vote for them at all. Straight-party voting may also expedite the voting process, making a quick one-stop experience rather than wading through each selection individually.
As a matter of principle, I do not like straight-party voting. A position is no better than the person who holds it. While party alignment reflects something about principles, voters should give serious thought to the beliefs, experience, and qualifications of each individual candidate. In practice, even if I knew ahead of time that I would be voting for candidates who all belonged to one party, I never chose to vote for the party, but selected each candidate individually.[iii]
Christians who are “all in” for a “straight party” probably are neither careful voters nor careful Christians. Christian culture is created in Christ and is prescribed in the New Testament. Though times change and cultures differ, the Christian culture is unique and exists independently of world cultures. Christian culture is neither Jewish nor Gentile (Romans 10:12, 1 Corinthians 10:32, Colossians 3:11). “Christian politics” is neither Democrat nor Republican, but seeks consistently to follow biblical principles, and will dissent from parties or candidates when they diverge from biblical principles. The culture of gathering believers – which exists outside of and independently from world governments, cultures, and standards – is universal and permanent, having neither command to change nor necessity to conform. We must be “all in” for Jesus Christ and his word.

The scope of biblical commands
- Determine the intended audience for the text.
- What category of people is it addressed to? Am I a member of that category?
- Determine the basis of the command. What is the logic behind the command?
- Determine the progress of revelation on this topic. Is it consistent throughout Scripture, modified later, frequent or occasional, or interpreted in a particular way by Christ or the apostles?
- Is the text normative, or merely narrative? Some texts are descriptive, but not prescriptive. Narrative does not always imply that we should “go and do likewise.”
- Interpret imperatives in light of their literary genre. A specific context may contain both timeless and temporary forms. The principle of antithesis; A particular imperative might be limited by the evil to which it is opposed: that is, if we are told to “do A as opposed to B,” that does not necessarily translate to “always do A.”
- Legalism is a misuse of the moral law that occurs in several forms: An attempt to become right with God through meritorious obedience. (Rom. 3-4). Imposition of the Law on Gentiles, for whom it was never intended (Acts 15, Gal. 1-4; Paul argues clearly in Galatians 3 that the Law was intended to be temporary and that its time was over). A focus on minor matters of the Law as a way to justify failure to reflect bigger, less explicit matters (e.g. in Matt. 23:23-24, Jesus attacks the Pharisees for using assiduous tithing as an excuse to avoid justice). Elevation of pious application of the Law to the level of Law itself (e.g. Matt. 15:1-9, Mark 3:1-6). On the other hand, seeking to obey specific commands of Christ is not “legalism,” no matter how many evangellyfish throw the term around arbitrarily.
- it is addressed to an enduring audience
- it is based on a permanent relationship
- it is repeated, especially transculturally
- it is supported by prescriptive, and not merely descriptive, passages
- it is supported without abusing its literary genre
- it is taught as principle, not merely a manifestation of a principle.
A Demon’s Guide to the Election

Not chasing into an impregnable castle
It is the duty of preachers to plead with men about their sins, but we must always remember to speak in such a way as to lead them to the discovery of their state and condition. Otherwise, we may lead men to formality and hypocrisy and not accomplish the true end of preaching the gospel. It will not avail to beat a man off from his drunkenness into a sober formality. We must lay the axe at the root. To deal with sin without the root is like beating and enemy in the open field and chasing him into an impregnable castle where he cannot be touched. Drive the conviction to the heart, not just particular sins.

Things I thought
“If our history hadn’t been our history, what would our history be?”
“Works for salvation does not work for salvation.”
“Some people say that our country needs more tolerance and civility. The Bible does not say, ‘Tolerate your enemies’ or ‘Husbands, be civil to your wives.’ Tolerance and civility often teaches us to pretend each other are right. Love demands that we act right toward those we think are wrong.”
“If we never change, we must already be right about everything, or we are unwilling to admit we are wrong about anything.”

Pondering the Implications of the 2020 Election

Imagine that religious freedom is gone. What remains for Christians is fines, prison, exile, and martyrdom. Then ask yourself this: Has my preaching been developing real, radical Christians? Christians who can sing on the scaffold, ‘Let goods and kindred go, This mortal life also; The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still; His kingdom is forever.’”
“As is characteristic of Piper’s personal humility, he allows that ‘you need not be sinning if you weigh matters differently,’ and adds, ‘my way need not be yours.’...Piper’s argument fails to recognize that people can decide not to imitate the sins of a leader, but they cannot do that with laws. Laws require obedience. But millions of people have seen and decided not to imitate Trump’s character flaws. The most frequent comment I hear from Trump supporters is something like, ‘I don’t like his insulting tweets or his personality, but I’m supporting him anyway because he has brought about good laws and policies.’”
