On this day, February 19, 1846, the independent Republic of Texas became a state of the United States, with North Carolina native James Pinckney Henderson its first governor.

Texas has indeed had a long and illustrious history. Its uniqueness is probably unsurpassed as a state, and has long been subject to much stereotyping. As a side thought, it is ironic to learn that the cowboy did not originate in Texas, but in Florida. Today, know one would ever associate Florida with the cowboy image, but the cattle industry still thrives there in certain areas.
