“Thought in the West was de-Christianized somewhat like a caterpillar is devoured from the inside after the ichneumon fly has laid its eggs; the eggs laid in the caterpillar hatch into larvae, which in turn develop to feed on their host. The outer form of the caterpillar remains undamaged for some time until it too is finally destroyed...Similarly we are seeing the results in modern thought of what has been going on undercover for a long time. The false impression is created that the Christian faith has come to an end. What has happened is that a stream of ideology, which was anti-Christian from the start, has finally run its course. This ideology was at first intermixed with the Christian faith; but in the course of its refinement it rejected the Christian faith as essentially incompatible.”
