I have heard it said, even by "experts" in Baptist history, that the practice of starting new churches by "extending an arm" was an outgrowth of Landmarkism. This little history shows otherwise.

I agree. I also think we should recognize that the (sometimes) modern way of extending an arm -- a missionary plying around til he can get someone to "extend an arm" (i.e., pay his salary) -- is a variation on the older method by which a church extended her arms to places her members had moved and organized churches.
