I agree. But the church must remain tied to the word to be a true church. For example, the catholicized Roman church probably has historical succession to the apostles, but through some who branched off or apostasized from the truth of the gospel. I think they lost the keys to the kingdom, so certainly there must be more than historical succession.
I'm not sure what the original quote meant, or even who said it. I posted it to see how others would take it and what thoughts it brought out.
The keys of the kingdom were given by Jesus Christ to the church and therefore true succession is through the church. Mark Osgatharp
