We have a family of clowns in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, who do child evangelism. They sometimes occupy the pulpits of some churches in full regalia. They have a very effective ministry in their place.
We had an old saying, when "queer" was a decent word: "Everyone is a little queer except me and thee, and I have my doubts about thee."
Remember Dr. Harvey Springer? He was a rather lanky bloke and he was certainly different in the pulpit, with cowbow hat and all.
He once preached on Jonah, and during the sermon, he grabbed the seat of his trousers and his shoulder and thrust himself over top of the pulpit to demonstrate Jonah being tossed overboard. This was in the very formidable Jarvis Street Baptist Church of Dr. T.T. Shields.

ReplyDeleteCheers,

IIRC, one of the comments on the founders blog was that having "clowns" in the pulpit was nothing new!
