If one assumes the following, baptism is...I agree. If one assumes the following, baptism is the first step of obedience and that baptism is an outward sign of an inward change, I know of no reason not to baptize a new (or previously unbaptized older) believer as soon as practical. In some places this may mean waiting until Spring for the ice to melt from the logging pond. Or as is the case in my home church, it means waiting until the next second Sunday of the month.
Keith RobertssonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20166943.post-1136910177464933262006-01-10T10:22:00.000-06:002006-01-10T10:22:00.000-06:00Jim, I would agree that we have too many "false st...Jim, I would agree that we have too many "false starts". We probably agree in theory -- if a church accepts a person's profession as genuine, there is no reason to delay baptizing that person -- but might vary in practice because of circumstances and situations. I think there is much reason to be concerned with the pseudo-evangelism these days that passes for preaching the gospel. I think the real problem is not the "soon-ness" of the baptisms, but the shallowness of our evangelism. If we could resolve some of those issues, perhaps the immediacy of baptism might not be so scary of a proposition.

Best, RLVR. L. I might agree if I lived in a country where preaching the gospel could cost my life and also with baptisms. We live in countries with far too many false starts.

I did not push baptism, although I did preach on it as a step of obedience.

This is a time when I think the biblical concept is right, the timing not necessarily so.

Cheers,

JimAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
